Love Stories: A Love/Hate Relationship

There’s a reason so many brides-to-be choose to get married in the spring and summer. The mild weather, green grass and blooming flowers gives the whole world a lighter-than-air romantic feel. Birds are singing, pink sundresses are in store windows, and children are selling lemonade in homemade booths. It is a sweet time of year; a time to fall in love or get swept into someone else’s love story. While women may be a tad bit more inclined to sigh over a sappy story, men have heartstrings too. But what’s sweet and what’s saccharine?  This couple has opposing views.

She Said:  I’m not an exceptionally girly girl, but I am an exceptional sucker for a love story. I’m serious. I love football, comic books and Vince Vaughan movies, but I’m a total dork about romance. I wish I was a little more discerning, but I’m not.  I mean, I actually own a VHS copy of Runaway Bride; not exactly a critical darling. I like Jane Austen novels (and their movie counterparts). I like the swelling romance of a hit song from a musical. I read blog entries about newlyweds or breakup survivors and see rom-coms in the theater on opening night. I don’t like everything across the board, but as long as I buy the chemistry, I’m a goner. Now that spring is finally here, things see especially sigh-worthy to me too. So it looks like my romance beacon is honed in on several months of Lifetime movies and Susan Wiggs novels. Which means my husband has a lot of first kisses and “you complete me’s” to look forward to.

He Said:  I think guys in general get a bad rap when it comes to love stories.  It’s true, men may be more excited about Battle L.A. or the latest Stephen King novel then their lady counterparts, but not all guys hate the idea of “boy meets girl.”  My wife asked me just the other day what romantic movies I approved of and I could think of quite a few. I love the movie Singles. I thought Before Sunrise was really well done and I am not devoid of appreciation for When Harry Met Sally. Unlike my other half, however, I can’t take romance in just any form. I have a hard time with some of the old English tales. I don’t think many guys are comfortable wading through three hours of dense dialog that builds up to a kiss on the hand. While my wife would probably weep through a performance of La Boheme, I can’t handle the over-the-top drama of opera. I must conclude that love stories are fine in moderation, but shouldn’t be welcomed, bar none, with open arms.

So as the sun shines and spring showers paint the world with dewy innocence, you might not to be able to completely avoid the strains of romance.  But be sensitive to the level of tolerance in your other half.  While you may be happy whiling away the hours with a beach book or in front of a Hugh Grant marathon, you may need to mix in some episode of American Chopper or rent Skyline.
